This is why I can´t surf

Every morning when I wake up, I look out my kitchen window to see how the lake looks like. This time a year the sun rises behind the mountain about 7 AM. Last night it was about minus 10 Celsius and when i looked out the window this morning it looked like the lake was on fire

Driftwood

A couple of summers ago me and my family went to Spain and France in the summer. I wrote a post about a driftwood (HERE) and how I didn´t want to bring it home to Sweden. When we went surfing in Norway past fall i found a driftwood once again.
Andreas, Lars and I were crusing around on the beach after the surf waiting on the sunset. Just before the sunset I found this magnificent peace of driftwood calling out my name. This time a couldn´t let the peace of driftwood just lay there alone on the beach. So i brought it back home.

For you guys who don´t speak Norwegian, it says; “beach people”.

Good weekend

Its been a good weekend so far. Lars and I did some cross-country skiin Friday afternoon. Later on Johan meet up at Lars house and we decided to have a sauna. When we were done there Johan showed us that he brought a bottle of Morgan. After a while we were out of ice but managed to fix that the Swedish way. The night ended with a 1 a clock air rifle contest human target style.

Next morning up at nine a clock and of for some more more cross-country skiing with Erica this time.
Now its time for conditioning training at the gym to finish of the weekend. Next week I am getting a clip card at the swimming facility next to my gym. Its going to be swimming and underwater training from now on until the trip. Hopefully its going to be some more posts from the gym next week. After watching chasing Mavericks yesterday I got even more motivated do get in better shape. Strongly recommend that movie.

Woodman

Me and my brother Alex went up to the mountain yesterday. I brought the camera and the new 24-105 lens to try it out. It was snowy, windy and cold, so i kept my gloves on most of the time. I did managed to take some photos before we made the fire and the battery went out. We went to this place named Grinnsjön and planed to BBQ some hot dogs there. Since it has unlimited supply of dry wood we thought it would be a easy thing. It wasn´t. I took us about one hour to light it up, and I can a sure you it wasn´t a Costa Rica bonfire we made.

Got the tickets

Its been a while since I surfed last time. About three months to be exact! There ara many reasons why. Mostly because of school and work but also because of the cold winter the last two months. But there is one more reason…. I have bee saving for this:

biljetter

The trip is going to start on the Pacific side of Costa Rica, and end somewhere in California three months later. Our plan is to take the bus all the way through Central America along the coastline. Roughly like the map below.

Travel plans

A couple of months ago I started to work out for the trip, to assure that I would be in great shape when Erica and I arrive there. Most of the posts the next two months before the trip are going to be about me getting in “surf shape” and what preparations that are necessary before a trip like this. So stay tuned. I will try to keep the blog updated as often as I can

Mr Blacks island

Past summer I did some posts when Johan and I went SUP:ing. A couple of times we went this island that we call Mr Blacks island. It is a small island just outside Vänersborg. About 40 years or so it lived an old erimit there. He had a house, a tractor and small bridge who toke him over a small man-made channel. Today Mr Black is dead since many years. The bridge is gone and we couldn’t find the tractor on is Island. Since we didn’t explored that much of the island past summer we decided to do a trip once again.

The only problem with our trip was that most parts of Vänern outside Vänersborg are frozen these days. So we had to put the boards on the quatro and bring them closer to the island were the water is moving a bit more and keeps it from freezing. As all the the swedes know it has been super cold the last couple of days. I think it was about -10 C when we started to paddle out there. When we after five minutes got to the other side the gloves were all icy and the surface on the boards was cover with ice as well. We then made a short walk around the island to find the best campsite. As we had expected it was a small cape with old oaks hanging down in the water that we had looked at some months earlier. We made a small fire and had some hot dogs. When we were about to leave some fog came in over the water and at the same time the sun came out below the clouds and it was just magic.

Sunset surf

Now in the end of the week high tide is late in the afternoon. Since Alde works best on mid going to high tide, we could finally have a sunset surf for the first time here.
The swell was supposed to be smaller yesterday, but when we got there we could hear the stones rolling down the beach and the waves breaking on the pier louder than the other days. We were lucky. It ended up being the biggest and “cleanest” day on the trip with a perfect sunset with Tenerife in the background. Lasse toke a lot of photos and recorded some from the beach before going out himself, and I recorded almost every wave from the gopro.
I am putting up some photos now, but the gopro going to take a bit longer this time now when I have more material than before. Tomorrow we are flying back to Sweden to reality. Hopefully it’s going to be some more storms before winter hits full on.

Aldea, day two

The second day at the Canaries, Lars and I went back to Aldea. This time we went the opposite way around the island to make the trip shorter. It still takes about one hour and 20 minutes to get there. We have now surfed Aldea about four times, but this day was the first time we saw Tenerife. It was just a couple of kilometers away. I think it might have been clouds and fog the other times we have been there. You can also see Teide (the volcano). What Lars can remember its about 3000 meters high. Should not be to hard to see from a couple of kilometers. Tomorrow we are going back up to the “north shore” to get some waves. We have also been taking go pro movies that I will put up later on.

Back at the Canaries

After a long travel day Lars and I finally arrived to our hotel on Gran Canary. We are staying at the same place as we did last time, but a different hotel. Since the well looked super good ( north east) we decided to head up north. We went do check out Las Palmas. It was messy but we went out any way. After like 15 minutes of just paddling we went back in. Instead of keep surfing Las Palmas we went a bit east on the same shore. It still looked bad so we sat back into the car and went for the east coast, playa Aldea. In the end it turned out to be a good choice. It delivered as it did a year and a half ago 😉
